When The Apostles Acts Up
Book Of Acts Series:  Don’t Go To Church, Be The Church

Feb 11, 2018 Preaching | Ptr. Jay Jackson

The book of Acts, also known as the Acts of the Apostles, transitioned fluidly from the book of Luke. It tells the story of the great deeds of the apostles, of ordinary men who were sent out as messengers and ambassadors of Jesus Christ.

While the book of Luke tells us about the finished work of Christ (redemption), the book of Acts tells us what Jesus began to do and teach (reconciliation).

Jesus appeared to His disciples and gave them specific instructions to not leave Jerusalem until God the Father has given them the promised gift, the Holy Spirit. He has reminded the apostles that John has baptized with water but God will baptize them with the Holy Spirit, giving them sustaining power and boldness to proclaim the Word of God

Jesus provided the right relationship with God and His followers promote right relationship with God.

Who Is The Light Of The World?

  • Jesus is the light of the world

John 9:5
While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” (NASB)

  • We are the light of the world

Matthew 5:14-16
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a [a]hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” (NASB)

When Jesus ascended to Heaven, we were given the reponsibility to be the light of the world, to be examples to those in the world.

Are we letting our light shine? What decisions will the people around us make when they see us do ‘life’? what conclusions will they reach about Jesus Christ when they see how we live?

Our responsibility is to represent and be a witness of Jesus everywhere and all the time. We are the standard of who is Jesus to the people who do not know Him.

After Jesus has spoken to them, he was lifted up into the sky and a cloud received Him. While, the apostles stood gaping and looking intently into the sky, two angels sent from Heaven appeared and told them that Jesus will be coming back the same way and will rule the world.

In the meantime, Jesus has left them a task: to be Jesus’ witnesses.

Reflection: How are we living our lives as witnesses of Christ? We can only be better witnesses of Christ if we have a deeper and intimate relationship with Him.

Service begins when God’s people leave the “church” – building.
